It may be a sad statement about the times in which we live, but a new update made to an existing app may just save Israeli lives.

Following the recent civil war in Syria, when questions of further attacks against Israel were again brought up, i-Apps, an Israeli smartphone application development company, updated its "Merkhav Mugan" app to list Israel’s bomb shelters to allow its citizens to locate the one nearest to them in the case of rocket attacks.

The GPS-based app – the brainchild of two residents of Ashdod - will not only inform Israelis as to the closest shelter or secure area, but also the quickest way to get there, a component that could save lives.

The app, first launched six months, was originally geared to those who lived in Southern Israel who had been victimized for more than a decade with rocket attacks from Gaza. Now, i-Apps added the information to help those living in the north of the country.

"This app helps citizens to find safe areas throughout Israel during emergencies", said i-Apps CEO Uri Segal.
