Co-Founder of Birthright Israel to Auction Off His Judaica Collection

Michael Steinhardt’s 500 Pieces in the Hands of Sotheby’s

Sotheby’s Auction House has announced that the man synonymous with Birthright Israel in the United States plans to auction off his extensive Judaica collection.

Jewish philanthropist Michael H. Steinhardt, a noted is hedge fund manager, investor, and a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania intends to say goodbye to his 500-piece collection in April.

Steinhardt has donated over $125 million to a variety of Jewish causes. He and Canadian Charles Bronfman co-founded Taglit-Birthright Israel, which has to date sent over 220,000 young Jews aged 18–26 on a 10-day trip to Israel without charge.

Sotheby’s will sell Steinhardt’s collection with a dedicated New York auction on April 29 called "A Treasured Legacy: The Michael & Judy Steinhardt Judaica Collection.”

Prior to the New York auction, the Steinhardt collection which will be shown at Sotheby’s York Avenue Galleries from January 25th to 31st, followed by a travelling show that will take the best of the collection to Moscow and Jerusalem before returning to New York for an exhibition prior to the April 29th auction.

"It is time for the collection to be passed onto a new generation in the hopes that it will encourage them in turn to discover a rich Jewish heritage and the joy of owning a piece of the past," Steinhardt said in a recent statement.

"The exceptional and rare objects that comprise the Steinhardt Collection illustrate the sweep of Jewish history from antiquity through the 20th century and across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas," read a Sotheby's statement.
