Guy Pnini, named as the captain of the Israel Basketball Association’s Maccabi Tel Aviv club in the off season, took “trash talking” to a whole new – and unacceptable – level recently, and, as a result, has lost that captaincy.

During a game at Tel Aviv’s Nokia Arena on Sunday, Pnini, who has also been temporarily suspended, was caught red handed by a camera calling Hapoel Tel Aviv’s Jonathan Skjoldebrand a Nazi. And, as if that wasn’t enough, Pnini went on to make matters even worse by telling the Tel Aviv player that he hopes he gets cancer and that his father dies.

Despite Pnini’z subsequent apology, team management has also fined him NIS 100,000.

“After hearing what the player had to say and his honest apology, the club’s management cannot accept his behavior. His status as a player and a captain, who represents the club’s values, demands him to display added restraint and tolerance,” read a statement issued on December 2 by Maccabi Tel Aviv.

“I would like to apologize from the bottom of my heart for the things I said during the derby,” Pnini said. “I apologize to Jonathan and his family and to Maccabi Tel Aviv, my teammates and any sports fan who was offended by what I said. I would also like to apologize to my family who are Holocaust survivors. I’m ashamed of myself and of the way I acted.”
