“Fauxtography” a Popular Pastime of Palestinians

In the court of public opinion, manipulating media can be effective

It’s no secret that some Palestinians go out of their way to manipulate the media to have Israeli soldiers portrayed as barbaric, unfeeling automatons, in order to gain sympathy to their cause.

Now, a video taken on November 9th in the West Bank sheds even more light on this disturbing phenomenon as it shows a young girl, with two other children, spending far too much of their day screaming – and even physically pushing – IDF soldiers in an obvious attempt to have them respond in less than kind way.

What’s even more upsetting about this scenario is that the girl’s mother obviously put her daughter up to this task, as she happened to be there, with a video camera, and filmed the entire unpleasant episode while shouting encouragement to her daughter in an attempt to draw the soldiers’ ire.

With her mother encouraging her, the young girl could be heard shouting at the soldiers, in Arabic, “You’re a traitor! I know you speak Arabic. Our soldiers are stronger than you! I’ll smash your head.” Then, with even more encouragement from her loving mother, the girl continues spewing venom, shouting: “I spit in your face. Go watch your mother instead of fighting little children. You’re a traitor. You kill people to get money from dogs.”

“Fauxtography” or “Pallywood” as it is called by the Israeli press, often includes photos of similar scenarios – without the proper context, of course - posted on various blogs and Facebook. In February, a photo allegedly portraying an Israeli soldier pointing his rife at - and placing his foot on the chest of a Palestinian girl - actually turned out to be actors in a street theater performance in Bahrain.

During Friday’s performance by the young girl, the IDF soldiers remained calm, and let the kids push then, often smiling in response.

Arutz 7 quotes an IDF source who says: “We make every effort not to fall for such traps, to exercise restraint and to use only crowd-control measures to disperse such protests.”

The video, which has already garnered more than 60,000 views, is a perfect example of media manipulation, and IDF Spokeswoman Avital Leibovich even posted it on her Twitter feed, describing it as “Using Palestinian kids for provocations.”

In some similar scenarios, pro-Palestinian activists have even paid Palestinian children for their performances.
