The furniture is meant to inspire, be playful and be functional.

All parents have experienced the nightmare that kindergartens can be. Old furniture, dirty rooms, and 30 kids yelling, running and fighting. That, unfortunately, is the environment most kids spend a significant portion of their days in, and for Tel-Aviv-based chidren's interior, furniture and toy designer Sarit Shani Hay, this reality was unacceptable.

A graduate of London's Chelsea College of Art and Design, Han was asked to help design a new kindergarten in Ramat Gan, near Tel Aviv, Israel. And while white alligators and mushroom houses might not come to mind when thinking of kindergartens, Han doesn't think like the rest of us, and that's a wonderful thing.

Han used the surroundings of the kindergarten - lush vegetable gardens and agricultural farm - as her inspiration.

Wide open spaces provide kids with plenty of room to play. Focal pieces like the mushroom and the wooden house, provide kids with places to hide, play and imagine. It's a combination of modern, clean and functional, which looks cool and inviting while providing the kids plenty of inspiration and means to interact, discover and play.

So next time you pick up your kids from their kindergarten, remember that that space could be so much more. You just need a different type of mind to bring it out.
