Israel’s southernmost city of Eilat, a busy port as well as a popular resort located at the northern tip of the Red Sea, is no stranger to celebrities.

The city's stunning beaches, great weather, exciting nightlife, beautiful desert landscapes and tennis facilities make it a popular destination for domestic and international tourism, and has welcomed many professional tennis players over the years.

Eilat has even played host to the European-African zone group of the Fed Cup Tennis Games for the past three years.

But on Monday night, in an unannounced visit, Sarena Williams, arguably the biggest female tennis star in the world, touched down in the picturesque city.

Williams' sojourn to the Jewish state came after a weekend visit to Nigeria and South Africa, where she competed against her sister Venus, in an exhibition match, followed by a stop in Paris, France.

Writing on her Twitter page, Sarena made her feelings for South Africa known: "I LOVE SOUTH AFRICA!!!! I LOVE it. I LOVE it. I LOVE it. And I love everyone here!!! You guys made my trip amaz! I can't wait to come back!" wrote Sarena.

At 31, Serena – who is expected to vacation in Israel until Sunday - has captured 29 Grand Slam titles, 15 in singles and the rest in doubles with her sister, Venus. This year she also won the Wimbledon and US Open tournaments.
