As you know, Hurricane Sandy, a storm of unprecedented magnitude, struck the eastern portion of the United States Monday evening, leaving 48 dead, and countless more injured, homeless, and unsure of what comes next; their lives and peace of mind in turmoil.

In response, United Jewish Appeal of Greater Toronto, following its mandate of tikkun olam (repairing the world), has established the UJA Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Fund, to help support recovery and rebuilding, and to provide immediate aid where it is needed the most.

One hundred percent of all proceeds collected by UJA for this fund will be distributed by The Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), as part of a North American-wide response to help victims in the Jewish and general populations. UJA of Greater Toronto will collaborate with JFNA, which will work to assess the needs in affected communities and provide immediate relief.

“As in the past, UJA Federation is there to respond to natural disasters across the globe”, said Ted Sokolsky, President & CEO, UJA Federation of Greater Toronto. “As Jews, and as a community, we have aresponsibility to repair the world especially at times like this. They say it could take as long as a month to clean up those areas affected by Hurricane Sandy, and, with the help of our generous community, we will do whatever we can to ease the burden being of those whose lives have been turned upside down by this tragic event.”
