When former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat passed away as a result of a stroke in 2004, rumours circulated about other underlying factors that may have contributed to his death, ranging from AIDS to poison.

With Palestinian authorities finally giving approval for Arafat's body to be exhumed so further tests can be carried out, criminal investigators from France, as well as a team from Switzerland, will be performing the tests in November, allowing the truth behind his demise to finally be known.

The exhumation is in response to the pleas of Arafat’s widow, Suha, who appealed to judges in France this summer to launch a murder probe into her husband's death.

Mrs. Arafat began her legal action after a Swiss laboratory reportedly uncovered “surprisingly high” levels of a lethal radioactive isotope called polonium-210 on some of her late husband’s belongings in June, which may make the poisoning theory much more plausible.

Polonium-210 was also used to kill former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006.
