The Beginning of the Last Ethiopian Aliya Touches Down in Israel

Operation Dove’s Wings hopes to have all Falash Murah make aliyah by 2014

More than 200 people realized the culmination of a dream on Monday, October 29th, when they touched down at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport.

The flight, which was carrying more than 250 Jewish men, women and children from Ethiopia, signified the start of the final chapter in the long and incredible story of the Falash Mura, that saw these brave people – Ethiopians whose once-Jewish ancestors long ago converted to Christianity – begin new lives in the Jewish state.

Monday's charter flight, the first of several scheduled monthly flights, was part of Operation Dove's Wings, a government initiative designed to increase the rate of aliyah to the Jewish state. The initiative hopes to see the last of the Falash Mura make their way to Israel by March, 2014.

The Ethiopians still waiting to board flights to their new home in Israel are currently staying in a refugee camp in the Gondar province. Some of those refugees have been waiting for as long as ten years.

The Falash Mura were evidently discovered with Operation Solomon, the name given to the airlift of over 14,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel in 1991.
