Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s decision to decline an invitation to the UN General Assembly this week in order to attend a private ceremony where he received an award from a Jewish-sponsored organization, is receiving plenty of bad press.

Instead of making his address to the U.N. on September 27, Prime Minister Harper was presented with the New York-based Appeal of Conscience Foundation (ACF) award from former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

Harper made his controversial decision to skip his address at the U.N.’s General Assembly resoundingly clear, calling the U.N. a “forum to single out Israel for criticism.”

Harper added that the Jewish state is not responsible for the problems that continue in the Middle East

“It is important to state, that whatever Israel’s shortcomings, neither its existence nor its policies are responsible for the pathologies present in that part of the world,” said Prime Minister Harper.

Another Canadian leader was clearly not pleased by the prime minister’s decision.

“I think the message is that Canada, that the Harper government doesn’t care about the United Nations,” said Bob Rae, the leader of Canada’s Liberal Party.

The ACF was started in 1965 by Arthur Schneier, a New York rabbi, to promote religious freedom, human rights and tolerance.
