A former SS guard at Auschwitz, Johann Breyer, who has made his home in Philadelphia, may finally see justice. The retired 87-year-old toolmaker, is facing possible extradition to Germany to face a trial as an accessory to the murder of 344,00 Jews.

Bryer, who has never denied having been a guard at the infamous Auschwitz, always maintained that his job was to work outside the camp on its periphery and was innocent of murdering any Jews trapped behind the barbed wire.

For years the U.S. Justice Department worked to deport Breyer, hoping to strip him of his US citizenship but their case stick never stuck. It was ruled that because Breyer had been a minor when he signed up with the SS, legally the court could not hold him responsible for his actions.

Now Germany has decided to open a war crimes investigation against Bryer calling for his extradition back to Germany. Bryer still maintains his innocence, stressing that he never served inside the death camp, deserting from the SS in 1944. According to US army intelligence this fact is disputed.
