Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty arrived in Jerusalem on January 29th for the first leg of a Middle East tour during which the men will participate in a series of high-level meetings on the Middle East Peace Process, regional security and economic cooperation.

“Canada is committed to helping achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East that will guarantee Israel’s right to live in peace and security with its neighbours,” said Minister Baird. “We urge the two parties to continue the peace talks recently facilitated by Jordan, and to move to direct negotiations, without preconditions.”

Upon arriving in Israel, Ministers Baird and Flaherty met with President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Netanyahu. Minister Baird will also meet with Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor, Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Lieberman and Minister of Defense Ehud Barak.

“Canada and Israel have a strong and close relationship based on shared values, common interests, and strong political and social ties,” said Minister Flaherty. “This visit is a unique opportunity to discuss shared economic priorities, such as leveraging private sector support for research and development so that innovation can thrive.”

After Israel, the Ministers will travel to the West Bank, where they will meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

The men have already taken part in a number of memorable moments including a trip on January 30 to the opening of the new International Seminars Wing of the Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Holocast Museum.

“This memorial here at Yad Vashem remembers those lost in one of the darkest moments in our history,” said Minister Baird. “Centres like this breathe strength and remind us of the resilience of the Jewish people. There is no better friend to Israel than Canada.”

Minister Baird also delivered a keynote address at the Interdisciplinary Centre in Herzilya.

“The state of Israel embodies principles that Canada values and respects,” Minister Baird told those in attendance. “It is a beacon of light in a region that craves freedon, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Canada upholds Israel’s right to exist – as a Jewish state – in peace and security. On this point, there is no space for moral ambivalence.”
