According to a year-end survey conducted by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics, the country’s population surpassed a total of 7.8 million by the end of 2011.

The figures, which were released today, indicate that Israel’s official population currently stands at 7,836,000. Jews living in Israel account for 75.3 per cent of this total, which equals approximately 5,901,000 individuals. Arab citizens make up 20.5% of the population, totaling 1,610,000 people.

The remaining 4.2 per cent of the population, which is comprised of 320,000 people, is not registered as Jewish or Arab. According to the Interior Ministry’s Population and Immigration Authority, these citizens are either primarily Christian or not classified by religion.

The Jewish population of Israel decreased by a tenth of a per cent in 2011 while Arabs increased by the same rate.

Overall, Israel’s population rose by 1.8 per cent, with an increase of 141,000 citizens in 2011. This rate is consistent with figures from the past decade, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Throughout the year, 166,800 new babies were born in Israel, as reported by Haaretz, and 17,500 individuals immigrated to the country.
