After being arrested in Cario in June on alleged espionage, sedition and attempted arson charges, Ilan Grapel has been released on Thursday in exchange for 25 Egyptian prisoners who were incarcerated in Israel.

Grapel was handed over to Israeli officials, Knesset member Israel Hasson and Attorney Yitzhak Molcho, who then boarded a plane headed for Israel.

The 25 Egyptian prisoners were shuttled to the Taba boarded crossing by the Israel Prison Service and then transferred to Egypt.

Of the 25 released, the first three transferred to Egypt were minors. The three told an Egyptian reporter that they were treated well in Israel. Another who was charged with drug trafficking claimed they were all treated “very badly.”

Grapel, a US-Israeli national, will only stay in Israel for a brief period and is then expected to fly back to the United States to be reunited with his family.

As part of the deal, the United States has agreed to sell Egypt several F-16 fighter jets, a deal Israel has opposed in the past.

Israel has vehemently denied all charges against Grapel.
