On Sunday, Jews all over the world participated in the first-ever international Shofar FlashMob. Art Kibbutz NYC, a newly launched global artist community, hosted the event.

Art Kibbutz NYC thought the FlashMob would be a fun and innovative way to give the Jewish tradition of sounding the Shofar daily during the Hebrew month of Elui a modern edge.

The Shofar (traditionally made from a ram’s horn) has many purposes. It was used in Biblical times to mark a new month, announce the beginning of festivals and battle, and is sounded on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The Shofar FlashMob garnered attention (and participants) from cities all over the globe including New York City, Jerusalem, Budapest, Kiev, Tbilisi, and Chicago.

All of the FlashMob groups (mostly comprised of artists and creative volunteers) blew the Shofar simultaneously at a designated public space for a total of two minutes to signify a call for teshuvah (repentance).

The video footage gathered from the FlashMob have been incorporated into a unique Rosh Hashanah electronic greeting card, available on the Art Kibbutz website.

Author Patricia Eszter Margit founded Art Kibbutz NYC. The Shofar FlashMob was made possible due to support from the ROI Community of Young Jewish Innovators, an international network of young social entrepreneurs, originally created by philanthropist Lynn Schusterman.
