Representatives of the Friends of Israel initiative, an organization committed to defend Israel’s right to exist, and led by the former Prime Minister of Spain, Jose Maria Aznar, was in Israel Thursday, where they vowed to do what they could to fight against Palestinian recognition at the United Nations.

The group, which included Aznar; John Bolton, the former U.S. representative to the United Nations; Lord William David Trimble, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who served on the commission of inquiry into Israel’s actions in the 2010 flotilla incident, and French entrepreneur Robert Agostinelli, a founding member of the Friends of Israel Initiative, met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Shimon Peres, Vice Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon, opposition leader Tzipi Livni and Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Aznar, a high level group of mostly non-Jews met in Paris in the middle of 2010 to launch the new project in defense of Israel’s right to exist.

This "Friends of Israel Initiative" has been joined by such notable figures as Nobel Peace Prize Laureate David Trimble, Peru’s former president Alejandro Toledo, Italian philosopher Marcello Pera, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, British historian Andrew Roberts, and others. Their key aim is to counter the growing efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel and its right to live in peace within safe and defensible borders.
