The Israeli Special Olympics team returned home from Athens, Greece earlier this week after a successful ten days of competition. Competing in a combined 11 sports, the 85-member team won a grand total of 51 medals; 16 bronzes, 18 silvers and 17 golds.

The 2011 summer games edition of the Special Olympics, designed for for mentally challenged athletes, ran from June 25 to July 4. Both the opening and closing ceremonies took place at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. Approximately 7,000 athletes from 165 countries competed in various tournaments and a total of 21 sports were played across 30 local venues. The Games were facilitated by about 25,000 volunteers who helped to make a difference.

The Israeli team made history earlier this week, as Arab athletes, Muhammad Kunbar and Jafar Tawil competed in the Games on behalf of Israel. Kunbar, from East Jerusalem and Tawil, from Beit Safafa, both 20-years-old were the first Israeli Arabs to ever represent the country at the Special Olympics.

Following the closing ceremonies on Monday night, Israel’s President, Shimon Peres called the team to offer his congratulations.

“The State of Israel is proud of you,” Peres told the group. He also emphasized that their accomplishments provided proof that success can always be achieved, even if difficulties must be overcome in the process.

Members of the Israeli delegation were excited to receive the phone call, as were the caregivers who were appointed by Israel’s Social Affairs Ministry to accompany the athletes on the trip.
