Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s memorial day for fallen soldiers, has moved the start time of the Euroleague championship basketball game in response to an Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv team, that does not want to play on its Memorial Day.

The May 8 final of the Euroleague’s Final Four tournament in Barcelona, Spain, will be played at 5:30 p.m. Israel time, so it does not interfere with Yom Hazikaron, the day for fallen soldiers and victims of terror.

Maccabi's general manager, Shimon Mizrachi, negotiated with Euroleague officials about starting the game earlier.

Maccabi, which has won the Euroleague title four times since 1977, must win its semifinal game on May 6 to qualify for the finals.

Playing a sport on a somber day like Yom Hazikaron does not come without its share of controversy. Twenty years ago, the club received much negative feedback for playing in the European Final Four in a game that ended after the start of Memorial Day in Israel.
