Canada Post and Israel Post have released a joint international rate commemorative stamp. The stamp marks more than 60 years of friendship and strong diplomatic relations between the two countries, and is the first joint stamp issue between Canada and Israel.

Canada's diplomatic relationships with Japan, China and Mexico have previously been recognized in stamp form, as well as on commemorative envelopes.

According to John Baird, Canada's Minister of Transport and Minister responsible for Canada Post, "Joint stamp issues like this one represent diplomacy in action. The bond between Canada and Israel continues to yield benefits for each country and its citizens. It is fitting that we celebrate the enduring friendship between our countries."

The stamp, which features human beings in the shape of Canada's Maple Leaf and Israel's Star of David, is inspired by the social ties between Canada and Israel.

"Canada Post is proud to work directly with Israel Post on this joint issue," said Moya Greene, President and Chief Executive Officer of Canada Post. "Today's release is part of a growing number of commemorative stamps designed to recognize Canada's strong diplomatic relationships around the world."

Illustrator Yarek Waszul designed the stamp in collaboration with Karen Henricks of the Toronto-based design firm q30. In total, 660,000 stamps have been printed and will be available in booklets of six stamps.

Miriam Ziv, Israel's Ambassador to Canada, stated that "Over 60 years ago, Israel and Canada established diplomatic relations and began a fruitful cooperation. Our countries have since strengthened their commitment as partners in many fields, including commerce, science, culture, education, public safety and trade."

She continued, "This stamp reflects the special bond between our two nations and our two peoples."

Each stamp measures 40 mm x 30.8 mm horizontally and has simulated perforations. The stamps, printed by Lowe-Martin, are pressure sensitive, and printed on Tullis Russell paper using lithography in four colours.

Additional information, as well as photos of the stamp, is available on Canada Post’s website: www.canadapost.ca/collection
