Earlier this week, Israelis made a warm gesture of tikkun olam as Israel beat the Guinness world record for donating the most hair to victims of cancer at a single charity drive.

All together, Israelis across the country donated hair weighing 117 pounds (53.1 kilograms), to be donated to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

The previous Guinness world record was 107 pounds (48.7 kilograms).

Organized by the Zichron Menachem Association for the Support of Children with Cancer and their Families in partnership with Pantene Products Israel, the charity drive in Jerusalem was a major success in promoting cancer awareness, and the ways people can help out.

Israel Hayom reports that over 250 women were in attendance, and approximately 200 hair salons took part in the benefit. It was set to be a three-day-drive, but the Israelis beat the record on its first day in a mere five hours.

“In order to make a child with cancer feel as normal and beautiful as possible, the goal is to fashion a wig that looks exactly like his/her hair. The child’s head is measured, and the wig is constructed from hair that is the closest match to his own,” reads an official statement from Zichron Menachem. “A curly-topped kid wants curls. A girl with red braids wants red braids. A teen with frizzy brown hair still wants…frizzy brown hair, even if she’s always complained about it!”
