Rock of Ages

Get ready for neon-coloured costumes, big hair and ‘80s rock. The first international production of the hit Broadway musical, Rock of Ages, will be coming to Toronto on April 20 at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. Along with Mirvish Productions, the group organized a preview for the local press on Monday.

The 20-minute tease introduced the press to Drew (Yvan Pedneault), an aspiring rock star living in LA, Sherrie (Elicia MacKenzie), a small town girl who wants to become an actress and a whole set of characters who surround them in their pursuit of their dreams. The media preview also included three performances, featuring four hits from the ‘80s: "Livin’ in Paradise," "Nothin’ But a Good Time," "High Enough" and "Here I Go Again."

The two main characters are both theatre thespians in their own right. Pedneault performed for two years in We Will Rock You, while MacKenzie played the lead role in the The Sound of Music. Producer Carl Levin describes the actors as "quadruple threats" and calls this Toronto ensemble as "the best we’ve ever seen."

Set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, Rock of Ages started in 2006. Directed by Kristin Hanggi and written by Chris D’Arienzo, it debuted at the Vanguard in Los Angeles. But it wasn’t until April 2009 that the production performed on Broadway. It was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

A coming-of-age and love story of sorts, Rock of Ages will feature hits such as "I Wanna Rock," "We're Not Gonna Take It," "I Want To Know What Love Is," "Don’t Stop Believin’" and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot."

The Toronto cast has been rehearsing since March 15 and Pedneault said the preview is nothing compared to the real show. He told Shalom Life, "You’re going to have to expect more jokes, more loud music, more energy and more sexy girls."
