In a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, close to 300 congress members have reaffirmed their loyalty to "the unbreakable bond that exists between [the U.S.] and the State of Israel."

The letter was delivered following various tension-inducing disagreements between Israel and the U.S., regarding the building of new homes in East Jerusalem.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently visited the US in attempt to subdue any residual tension, but was greeted coldly by the White House. Members of Congress, however, welcomed Netanyahu more warmly when they met during his visit.

The letter from Congress denotes its "deep concern" over the recent U.S.-Israeli rift. It stresses the fact that lawmakers had been assured by Netanyahu that events similar to these, leading up to the unsettled political atmosphere, would not be repeated.

The letter also emphasizes the “special bond between the U.S. and Israel,” and noted the “bilateral relationship” with Israel requires constant reinforcement.

It also quoted President Obama, saying that “Israel’s security is paramount” to the US’s Middle East policy, and that it is in the United States’ best interest to defend Israel in its endeavours to maintain a Jewish state.
