Singer/Guitarist Alex Chilton Dies at Age 59

Singer/guitarist Alex Chilton passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack in New Orleans. He was 59.


Chilton was an influential artist in the seventies. Along with his bands Big Star and the Box Tops, he went on to inspire the likes of R.E.M., having penned a song in his honour.


His band Big Star drew attention when the hit television show That 70's Show covered Big Star's 1972 song "In the Street."


News of Chilton's death spread quickly on the internet with notes of appreciation and accolades appearing on Twitter and various blogs.


At the Tennesse House of Commons, Representative Steve Cohen eulogized Chilton.
