Walk with Israel

More than 12,000 men, women and children spent Sunday, May 29th demonstrating their love for, and commitment to, the state of Israel, as participants of United Jewish Appeal’s Walk with Israel Family Challenge.

Departing from Coronation Park outside the CNE’s Prince’s Gates, and making its way through the streets of Toronto, the Walk transformed the downtown core into a sea of blue and white, with plenty of red thrown in, as enthusiastic participants waved Israeli and Canadian flags.

This year’s Walk with Israel, chaired by the husband and wife team of Laurie Sheff and Jonny Cole, which for the first time in its 44-year history featured the Family Fundraising Challenge, raised more than $500,000.

A portion of the proceeds will provide the people of Sderot, Eilat and Bat Yam with vital educational and social services.

“For almost a century, even before the establishment of the State of Israel, Jewish Toronto has shared a unique and powerful bond with the state, and the people, of Israel,” said UJA Board Chair, Elizabeth Wolfe, prior to the 10:00 a.m. start of the Walk.

"And this year, as has been the case for the past 44 years, the Walk with Israel illustrates that relationship perhaps better than any other. We are all here this morning as we celebrate the miracle that is Israel, as proud Canadians. UJA Federation has helped Israel successfully absorb more than 3 million immigrants since 1948. We have been partners with the people of Israel from the start. I am proud to be at the helm of UJA Federation in a community that is seen as a leader in the Jewish world. As we walk through Toronto’s streets with our families, friends and Jewish Toronto and friends of Israel, we should do so proud that we are changing lives through the funds we have raised, which will be put to work in Israel by UJA Federation.”

Also addressing the crowd were the chairs of UJA’s upcoming 2012 Campaign, Gil Palter and Barbara Bank; Walk Chairs, Sheff and Cole, as well as the Consul General of Israel for Ontario and Western Canada, Amir Gissin.

Several federal, provincial and municipal elected representatives were in attendance.
