Israel celebrates her 63rd year of independence

Jews in Israel and around the world are taking a moment today -Yom HaZikaron – to remember, and pay tribute to those who fell in defense of the State of Israel and those killed in terror attacks.

On Sunday in Israel, air raid sirens blared around the country for one minute to mark the beginning of the annual Day of Remembrance.

Speaking in front of families of fallen IDF soldiers at the Kotel in Jerusalem, Israeli President Shimon Peres, make an emotional, compelling address.

“We embrace the IDF, our beloved army, those that serve and those who have fallen. We will not rest and will not be silent until all our kidnapped and missing soldiers return home. We will not rest and will not be silent until we see Gilad Shalit here, with us, healthy and whole. We salute you, dear families that raised true heroes in whose merit we can dream big today. In Israel, to build momentum, to pursue peace. May their memories be for a blessing.”

Meanwhile, in Toronto, thousands are expected to fill Mel Lastman Square on May 10, to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s 63rd anniversary of independence, a day which always follows Yom Hazikiron.

The family-friendly celebration taking place will be taking place from 4:30 pm-9 pm at the Square, located on Yonge Street, north of Sheppard Avenue.

The event, sponsored by UJA Federation of Greater Toronto and the Prosserman JCC, will feature live Israeli music, inflatable carnival rides, arts and crafts, children’s entertainment and Israeli food.

New to this year’s annual event is a live concert featuring the Elevation Band; an acclaimed Atlanta based world music group, widely known for its unique Israeli/Jewish/American Pop sound.
