Natalie Portman has decided to give up her vegan lifestyle during her pregnancy. The Oscar-winner became a vegetarian at the tender age of eight, but eliminated all animal products from her diet after reading Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals in 2009.

"I actually went back to being vegetarian when I became pregnant, just because I felt like I wanted that stuff. "I was listening to my body to have eggs and dairy and that sort of stuff. I know there are people who do stay vegan, but I think you have to just be careful, watch your iron levels and your B12 levels and supplement those if there are things that might be low in your diet," Portman told an Atlanta radio station on Monday.

She revealed that her impetus for going back to vegetarianism was due to her cravings for sweets.

“If you're not eating eggs then you can't have cookies or cake from regular bakeries, which can become a problem when that's all you want to eat. I actually wanted eggs at the beginning and then they grossed me out after a while," she further explained in the interview.

The quondam self-proclaimed “vegan activist" launched her own line of vegan shoes with Te Casan in 2008. The footwear retained a stylish, luxurious  look without the use of leather.

Portman and fiancé, Benjamin Millepied who is a choreographer for New York City Ballet, are expecting their child sometime this summer.
