Sometimes it can feel like the State of Israel and the Jewish people are alone in their fight to free Gilad Shalit, but we aren’t, as has been vocally and publicly demonstrated by Canada and Italy, two of Israel’s strongest partners.

Italy has shown its solidarity with the captive IDF soldier by making him an honourary citizen of Italy. They have also held events, supported by Rome’s mayor, Alemanno Gianni, where they turned off all the lights in the Colosseum as a reminder to all their citizens, and the rest of the world, to “Free Gilad now.”

Last week the UJA of Greater Toronto held their own event as a reminder that Shalit has been in captivity for over 1700 days.

“When someone has been a prisoner of terrorists for as long as Gilad Shalit, it’s easy for him to become out of sight and out of mind,” said Sheldon Goodman, co-chair of UJA Federation’s Committee on Public Affairs. “Our job is to ensure that Gilad’s plight is never forgotten. This urgent community event will tell the world that Gilad is not alone.”

To demonstrate their support for the event, Gianni sent a video on behalf of the Italian government to be shown at the event.
