Libyan Leader Gaddafi a Jew?

If his grandmother was a Jew, and his mother was Jew, that would make Gaddafi...

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi

Amid whispers of anti-Semitism stemming from his recent radio rant, Charlie Sheen has “come out proudly” to publicly embrace his Jewish roots. His mother was Jewish as are his twin boys, born to Sheen’s ex-wife, Brook Mueller, a Jew.

Now comes news, albeit not for the first time, that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is also a Jew, but not one likely to announce it proudly, in the near future, that is, unless he has to.

Last year, Israel’s Channel 2 News interviewed two Israeli women of Libyan origin claiming to be distant relatives of Gaddafi, Rachel Saada and Guita Brown.

According to Guita, her grandmother was the sister of Gaddafi's grandmother. She, a Jewess, had left her husband for a Libyan sheikh. They had a daughter who ultimately would be Gaddafi's mother, making Gaddafi Jewish under halacha (Jewish law).

Rachel Saada, Brown’s granddaughter, explained her take on this most interesting of family trees.

“While Gaddafi’s grandmother converted to Islam when she married the sheikh, Jewish religious law dictates that she was still Jewish,” says Saada.

With apologies to Canadian songbird Alanis Morrisette, wouldn’t it be ironic if Gaddafi is, as many people expect, overthrown and ousted from Libya, and decides that his best exit strategy would be to immigrate to Israel as a Jew under the state’s Law of Return.

If the ladies’ stories are true, Israel would be obligated by its own laws to take Gaddafi in. That is, of course, if Gaddafi can, in fact, prove that he is a Jew, and proudly.
