iPad 2

It’s here! The iPad 2 is here along with CEO Steve Jobs, who made a surprising appearance despite all the speculations about his health, as Apple debuted its new tablet, and boy is it good. With a faster processor, more memory for your multitasking madness and two cameras all put into an ultra-thin new design. “So what’s new?” as Jobs said.

Forget about the first iPad, the iPad 2 is a whole new game. According to Jobs, the tablet will be “dramatically faster” than its predecessor, one that will help Apple to widen its lead again in the tablet market. Contrary to the rumors, the tablet changed internally- it’s now supporting a faster processor which is “up to two times faster’ and a graphics processor which is nearly 10 times faster.

“It’s a new design” and a really pretty one I must say. It has gone from 13.4 mm to 8.8 millimeters, which is thinner by almost 33% than the current iPad and even thinner than the iPhone 4. It also lost some weight, so it is easier to handle. And guess what? It will come in both black and white colors “from day one”.

The new iPad comes with two built-in cameras, a frontal VGA camera- for video chatting using Apple’s Facetime application- and a rear-facing with 720p HD video capability. Like the current iPad, it will have the same battery life, 10 hours and about one month in idle and finally “you can even charge the iPad while you're using it,” Jobs added.

Apple also added an awesome HDMI port, allowing to connect the iPad to TV sets and play videos at 1080p Full HD. To celebrate its release, Apple will also roll out a new operating system- iOS 4.3, which will allow apple’s users to create Wi-Fi hotspots and share their Internet connection.

Jobs also mentioned the new smart cover- a thin case which attached to the tablet with magnets. When not used, it can be folded back and provide a stand for the tablet. It’s available in models ranging from $39 to $69.

It will go on sale nine days from now, on March 11 in the US, where AT&T and Verizon will be offering the 3G model. In Canada and some 26 other countries (including United Kingdom, France, Germany) its debut date will be March 25.

Suprisingly, the new iPad will have the same familiar price structure as the current one: the Wi-Fi model will come for $499, $599 and $699 for the 16, 32 and 64GB models respectively. The 3G takes the prices up to $629, $729 and $829 (USD).

"We've been working on this project for a while and I didn't want to miss this," Jobs summarized it up. "People laughed at us for using the word magical," he continued. "But you know what? It's turned out to be magical."
