London 2012 Olympic Logo

In another far reaching conspiracy theory, Iran has decided the logo being used for the London 2012 Olympic games spells the word 'Zion', and is threatening to boycott the games unless the organizers replace the logo.

In a bit of irony, the logo which was unvailed four years ago and until now has received no mention by Iran, has been criticized by some to resemble a swastika.  However, Iran sees it differntly and believes it to be a part of a pro-Israeli conspiracy.

A letter was sent to the International Olympic Committee from the state-back Iranian Students News Agency, which is often used to convery official pronouncements.  The letter, considered a formal complaint, says: "As internet documents have proved, using the word Zion in the logo of the 2012 Olympic Games is a disgracing action and against the Olympics' valuable mottos.

"There is no doubt that negligence of the issue from your side may affect the presence of some countries in the Games, especially Iran which abides by commitments to the values and principles."

What said "internet documents" are are left to anyone's imagination.

An IOC offical confirmed that they received Tehran's formal complaint but that "The London 2012 logo represents the figure 2012, nothing else."

A spokesman for the London Olympic organising commitee added: "It was launched in 2007 following testing and consultation.  We are surprised that this compliant has been made now."

Based on Iran's results at the Beijing 2008 Olympic games, where they sent 55 athletes and only achieved 2 medals, this complaint might be considered the best way for Iran to save face at the 2012 olympics.  Just don't show up.
