PLO Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat

PLO chief negotiator, Saeb Erekat, resigned today after an internal investigation revealed that his office leaked the Palestinian Papers.

"If there was any security failure in my office, then I am responsible. For that, I have resigned,” Erekat told AP.

He formerly led the Negotiations Support Unit but remains on the PLO’S executive committee.

Al Jazeera released the Palestinian Papers last month, which covered a decade of negotiations between Israel and Palestinians and revealed concessions by Palestinians on key issues such as yielding claims to territory and capping the number of Palestinian refugees allowed to live in Israel. Erekat signed many of the papers. He said many documents were tampered with.

When they were released Erekat blamed Al Jazeera for trying to damage the peace process and "a revolution against their leaders in order to bring down the Palestinian political system," reports Al Jazeera.
