TIFF co-director Cameron Bailey has announced a new initiative called Rising Stars. The brand new initiative will help discover a new generation of Canadian talent.

The programme will have its start at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival with the goal of showcasing four actors who would like to start international careers.

“Filmmaking in Canada has resisted a star system, yet many Canadian actors have gone on to enormous global success,” said Cameron Bailey in a statement. “TIFF’s Rising Stars aims to find Canada’s most promising actors and give them the professional tools and contacts they need to break big.”

The Rising Star programme is set to feature a mentoring component, which will connect the upcoming actors with established Canadian talent that have successful careers abroad.

“We want to see a film culture where Canadian actors work both at home and abroad,” said Karen Bruce, TIFF’s director of Canadian initiatives, in a statement. “We are proud of the success some Canadian actors have had in Hollywood, Bollywood, the U.K. and Hong Kong. Now we want to see Canada’s film industry crossing borders in the same way and playing a leading role in the world’s film industry.”

The four selected actors will receive a showcase at the upcoming film festival and professional development with agents, casting directors, publicists, managers and filmmakers. The selection process will be announced in the next few weeks.
