Jay Klein, the 30 year old president of Toronto-based Action Candy Co., knew from an early age that he had a keen sense of business. “I always enjoyed business and had some great experiences in my youth, whether is was selling candy out of my backpack in middle school, or working with the Montreal Expos and St. Louis Cardinals as a bat boy. I loved the feeling of converting my time and sales ability to making money.” explains Klein.

After obtaining an Honours double major in Political Science and Communications from York University, Klein realized that his tenure with the academic world was over. Despite his mother’s ardent desire that he attend law school, Jay chose to make the inevitable leap into the business world. “I made a deal that if I couldn’t make it after one year, I would go to law school. Looking back, I was very happy with the outcome of that deal,” says Klein who went on to create Drivertise International Inc., an advertising and marketing firm at the ripe old age of twenty-one. Klein’s bravura paid off in volumes, as Drivertise evolved and has flourished a decade later.

In 2008, Klein explored further directions within the business world, starting Action Candy Company. “The function category was growing very quickly, with Protein Bars, Energy Drinks and Antioxidants, so I thought if we put those ingredients in something simple like gum, it would appeal to people.” Klein explains. BONUS GUM became the company’s first brand, and three years later their new brand, PUR GUM has become the lead selling “better for you” gum within the health industry in Canada. PUR GUM eliminates detrimental components such as Aspartame, sorbitol, maltitol from the ingredients list, and has been certified Vegan, Non-GMO, and gluten-free.

Despite being occupied with running both companies, Klein still manages to find some spare time. “I enjoy working with other entrepreneurs on developing business ideas and marketing concepts. I also really enjoy giving that same effort to many of the causes I am involved in.” he says. Klein is actively involved with UJA, JNF, CJPAC, Mount Sinai, Make a Wish Toronto, and POGO, and enjoys softball, hockey, golf, and the arts. And if there is warm, sunny day, Klein indulges in a challenging game of golf.

“It is one of the greatest feelings in the world to make someone smile, and in any capacity that I have the opportunity to do that, I enjoy it.” said Klein.
