Andrea Bocelli at a ceremony to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Andrea Bocelli, the internationally renowned Italian tenor, has accepted an invitation by the Israeli Opera to come to the country in June for a special concert. It will be held at the foothills of the famous landmark and tourist destination point, Masada.

"Bringing Bocelli to Israel is a considerable accomplishment, but it should be noted that he was very happy to receive the invitation," said Chana Monitz, Manager of the Israeli Opera. "The success of the event we held on the foothills of Masada last year had a huge global impact, whose force surprised even us. The next step, launching a full opera festival, was a natural one and its implementation awards us significant standing among international opera festivals."

Bocelli, who has visited Israel before, will fulfill Monitz's dream for this coming Opera Festival.

"When I told Bocelli about the event and we suggested that he come, he said he would do so gladly and was very interested in taking part. We are thrilled."

In cooperation with the Or Association, the concert will be held on June 12 and proceeds will be in support of residents of the Negev and Galilee.

Bocelli will be the closing act of the Opera Festival and will include performances of famous pieces such as of the four act opera "Aida". Accompanying Bocelli will be musicians from the Rishon Lezion Symphonic Orchestra and the opera choir. Choir and orchestra specific pieces will also be preformed during the concert.

It was two years ago, in 2008, that Bocelli last was in Israel as part of a visit in honour of the birthday of President Shimon Peres. Before this, Bocelli came to Israel for a gala concert with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Maestro Zubin Mehta.

It is yet to be determined who the maestro for the concert will be, but the opera said it will be finalized in the next few days.
