PrimeSense, the Israeli tech company that created the technology behind Microsoft’s massive hit, Kinect, has teamed up with Asus to create a new motion-sensing device for the PC, called the WAVI Xtion.

This new device will allow users to control their media centre PCs with gesture controls, much like the Xbox 360 when used with the Kinect. While the functionality will be similar to Kinect, the device will be more media focused than games focused.

The device, which is scheduled to launch in Q2 of 2011, will have an accompanying “Xtion Online Store” where developers can sell apps designed for the Xtion PRO platform. The development technology will be released in February.

Since the release of the Kinect, the internet has been flooded with videos of users hacking their Kinect, with some pretty spectacular results. This new open development technology will allow developers to dig even further into the development code of the device and come up with more interesting and consumer friendly apps which could then possible be translated to the Xbox 360 as well.

The Kinect controller has been a wonderful success story for PrimeSense and Microsoft. As of Dec 14th, worldwide sales of the controller reached over 4 million. The controller has been selling so well that it wasn’t available on Amazon.com for the greater part of the holiday due to overwhelming demand.
