Gary Lipman, executive vice president and COO of the JCCA (right) presents the Keter Torah Award to Martin Prosserman.

His son Ron sits on the board of the Prosserman JCC and has been actively involved in various charitable organizations including the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and Jewish Family and Child. Another son, Brian, gives of his time, teaching computers to seniors at the JCC that bears the family name. And grandson Michael is the founder and executive director of Urban Non-Violent Initiatives Through Youth (UNITY), a not-for-profit showing young people how positive forms of artistic self-expression can lead to better life choices.

“I feel fortunate that we’re in the position that we can give back, whether it be money, time…any type of giving is good giving, and this is a wonderful gift that carries Bubby Ellen’s legacy,” said Ron in one of the evening’s many emotional moments.

And with each child and grandchild who spoke, the picture of a man who values tzedakah, community, family and leadership came more clearly into focus. The man who founded Moore’s The Suit People has raised a family committed to “carrying it forward,” and is building a JCC that will improve and transform lives, much like Montreal’s YMHA did for him so many years before.
