Lady of the Forest album cover

Israeli jazz singer Karen Malka had her debut concert in Israel this week after the release of her album "Eshet Hayearot" ("Lady of the Forest") on October 4.

Her transition from being a back-up singer to a mainstage act is significant with the current lack of young female Israeli jazz and soul singers.

Malka has been in the music industry for several years and worked hard to get to this point. Her opening concert on Sunday at the Zappa club in Tel Aviv was hampered by poor winter weather conditions which saw many who bought tickets stay home, but it will not be the last time to experience Malka's vocals live in Israel.

Lady of the Forest stays true to the title with many lyrical references to nature. The album is a mix of her own compositions, a traditional Hebrew poem and a track composed by her producer, Avishai Cohen. Active also as a musician, Cohen has released several CDs and has played in concerts internationally. His own music is a mixture of Middle Eastern, eastern European and African-American musical idioms, and his writing has been referred to as "New Age lyricism." Cohen also performs on the album.

Young musicians rounded out Malka's live ensemble, with pianist Nitay Hershkovitz, guitarist Guy Shoham, contrabassist Gilad Abro and drummer Amir Bresler. During the encore, Cohen and percussionist Itamar Doari joined on stage for an alternate version of the album's track "All or Nothing."

The album can be purchased online through the Karen Malka website, or RazDaz Recordz.
