One can only hope that the pairing of talented writers with gifted performers leads to one thing: a great show. That’s the case with the October cast of Love, Loss, and What I Wore

Based on the best-selling book by Ilene Beckerman, and written by Nora and Delia Ephron (the sisters who wrote the film You’ve Got Mail), Love, Loss, and What I Wore is being staged at the Panasonic Theatre and features a rotating cast of five women.

The October group features Stacey Farber (Degrassi: The Next Generation, 18 to Life), Trey Anthony (da Kink in my Hair), Patricia Hamilton (Anne of Green Gables), Leah Pinsent (Made in Canada) and Mary Lou Fallis (Primadonna Diaries).

It’s impossible to describe who plays what role because each performer plays dozens of different women. Love, Loss, and What I Wore isn’t your typical play in that the actors don’t move around. They sit on stools with scripts standing before them on music stands. This may sound boring but it’s anything but. It allows for the stories to really stand out.

As the title hints, the play tells stories through clothes. And not just one type of story, but a variety of different memories. There are stories about prom, cancer, Madonna, marriage, and the list goes on.

Quite a few Jewish references are sprinkled throughout the show, including mentions of Rabbis and Rosh Hashanah, and lines like “Nice Jewish girls don’t get their ears pierced.”

If you’re a husband or a boyfriend being dragged to see Love, Loss, and What I Wore, there’s no need to panic. These five women will win you over. And while you might not be able to relate to all of the stories, you can definitely appreciate them.

The play might be a tad too long (approximately 90 minutes), but that’s okay because it’s rare to find a show that’s equally touching and funny.

Love, Loss, and What I Wore runs until Oct. 30 at the Panasonic Theatre. For more information, visit www.lovelossonstage.ca or  www.mirvish.com
