Fans of West Side Story, Gypsy and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum are in for a treat: in December, celebrated composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim will be taking the stage in Toronto for a one-on-one conversation with National Post theatre critic Robert Cushman.

Known for his contributions to more than a dozen shows and as the single-most influential force in bringing the Broadway musical into the modern age, Sondheim has created the scores for such classics as Company, Follies, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, Assassins andmany more. During the one-night-only event he will discuss his career, his predecessors – including his mentor, Oscar Hammerstein II – the state of musical theatre, and reflect on his own creative processes.

This event follows the publication of his new book,Finishing The Hat -- Collected Lyrics (1954-1981) with Attendant Comments, Principles, Heresies, Grudges, Whines and Anecdotes(Knopf, Oct. 26, 2010). Mirvish Productions will also be co-presenting A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with the Stratford Shakespeare Festival Dec. 15-Jan. 16 at the Canon Theatre, with music and lyrics by Sondheim and directed by Des McAnuff.
