In Woody Allen’s latest dramedy, a group of interconnected characters search for love and happiness. But if you’ve seen any Allen flick, you know that it’s not such an easy task.

Set in London, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger focuses on two couples:  Helena
(played by Gemma Jones) and Alfie (Anthony Hopkins), who’ve been married for 40 years, and their daughter Sally (Naomi Watts), who’s married to struggling author Roy (Josh Brolin).

When Alfie enters a post-midlife crisis and starts pursuing a call girl, Helena starts seeing a a fortune-teller (Pauline Collins), who predicts that she’ll meet a “tall dark stranger.” Sally and Roy are still together, but that doesn’t mean things are going well. She finds a job at a gallery while Roy tries to sell his new novel. While he waits to find out the fate of his book, Roy begins to flirt with a new neighbour (Freida Pinto).

Allen deals with his usual themes in You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, but  it’s interesting to see the story unravel in a new city. The ending is a little disappointing but the story is engaging and the casting is fantastic.

The film is screening at TIFF on Sunday Sept. 12 (6 p.m. at the VISA Screening room) and Sept. 19 (12 p.m at AMC 6).
