Montrealers Jerome Sable and Eli Batalion will make their filmmaking debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Legend of Beaver Dam, a horror musical short film, will open the festival’s Midnight Madness series.

The movie tells the story of Danny Zigwitz, a nerdy young camper who tries to save his fellow campers from a monster.

The Legend of Beaver Dam stars two Toronto musical theatre veterans: Seán Cullen and Rick Miller. “We knew we needed super talents who could do it all, and that’s what these guys are,” said Sable.

Sable and Batalion are best known for their 2002 Fringe hit JOB: The Hip-Hop Musical. The musical re-told the biblical Book of Job through hip-hop. The duo went on to create other award-winning theatre productions, including JOB II, J.O.B. The Hip-Hopera and Hip-Hop 4 Dummeez.

Almost a decade after they premiered their first show in Toronto, they’re back in the city where it all started with the horror musical.

“It all started in Toronto,” said Sable. “We came to do the Fringe in 2001, and we ended up doing hundreds of performances over the course of five years…The Taragon theatre, the Toronto media, the audiences were extremely supportive and receptive to our work. It means a lot to us to come back and have our film premiere in the city that kick started our careers.”
