Maury Chaykin Dies at 61

argin: 0px; font: 12px Helvetica;"> Famed character actor Maury Chaykin died in Toronto last Tuesday, his 61st birthday. According to reports, the Canadian actor was battling kidney problems.

 

Chaykin has more than 150 film and TV credits, including a breakout role in the Oscar-winning Dances with Wolves. He received critical acclaim for starring in 1994’s Whale Music, playing a reclusive musician. The role won him a Genie Award. 

 

Born in 1949 in New York City, Chaykin’s father was an accounting professor at the City College of New York. His Canadian-born mother was a nurse. In the 1970s, the actor was offered a theatre role in Toronto and stayed in Canada ever since. 

 

Chaykin appeared on the HBO series Entourage playing a movie mogul called Harvey Weingard. He recently starred in the Jewish-themed HBO Canada series Less Than Kind, playing Sam Blecher. 

 

Recent film roles include Casino Jack starring Kevin Spacey and Canadian actress Rachelle Lefevre. Chaykin also appeared in Cooking With Stella, which premiered at last year's Toronto International Film Festival.
