Yann Martel was recently announced as the headlining author for this year’s Word on the Street festival in Toronto. Martel is best known for his award-winning book Life of Pi, but also recently penned a Holocaust novel titled Beatrice and Virgil. The Man Booker Prize winner is scheduled to read an excerpt from Beatrice and Virgil,  followed by a Q&A session.

Word on the Street is the biggest book and magazine festival in Canada. It debuted in 1990 in Toronto’s Queen West neighbourhood. Now on its 21st season, Word on the Street has taken its festival to other cities such as Vancouver, Halifax, Ottawa, Calgary and most recently Kitchener. The one-day event includes readings, Q&As, family events and a marketplace. Since its inception, the Word on the Street festival has featured over 471 authors, workshop presenters and art performers. It has also showcased 520 books and magazines.

This year, the festival will take place in four locations: Toronto, Halifax, Kitchener and Vancouver. The programme for the event is still in works but authors such as Kenneth Opel, Richard B. Wright, Elizabeth Abbott and Charlotte Gray will be gracing the Toronto stage along with Martel.

The 2010 Word on the Street Festival will take place on September 26. The following are the locations for each city: Toronto - Queen’s Park; Kitchener - Victoria Park; Halifax - Victoria Park; and Vancouver - Library Square. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.thewordonthestreet.ca.
