Barbra Streisand starred in "Funny Girl"

The 1964 Broadway Musical that made Barbra Streisand an international star is being revived on Broadway for the first time, according to The New York Times. The production will be directed by Barlett Sher (South Pacific).

Funny Girl is set in New York City before World War I and tells the story of Fanny Brice (played by Streisand). The movie version won the actress critical acclaim and her first Oscar in 1969.

Producer Bob Boyett told The New York Times that finding the right actress to play the iconic part will be a challenge because so many fans associate the character with Streisand, who was just 21 when she took the role.

Lea Michele, 23, is already a favourite among the blogosphere to play the part. The Glee star performed “Don’t Rain on My Parade” from Funny Girl on the hit TV show. No stranger to Broadway, Michele starred in a number of Broadway productions, including Spring Awakening.

Boyett told The New York Times that although a few Hollywood actresses (who he would not name) have expressed their interest in playing the main role, he’s also open to casting an unknown actress.

The revival of Funny Girl is expected to debut during the spring of 2012.
