The National Film Board of Canada’s The Socalled Movie is going from YouTube to the silver screen with a theatrical release this summer, according to Mediacaster.

Directed by Garry Beitel and produced by reFrame Films, the documentary follows a Montreal-based Jewish artist (Socalled) who fuses funk and hip-hop with Jewish klezmer. In the movie, Socalled introduces Fred Wesley (of James Brown fame) to klezmer. The film also explores Socalled’s collaborations with David Krakauer, filmmaker Benjamin Steiger Levine and singer Katie Moore.

The Socalled Movie was released on YouTube's new online VoD pay-per-view platform. The film had its Canadian debut at Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival.

The movie will be playing in select theatres in Montreal and Quebec City starting June 4. Socalled will be opening in Toronto on June 11, Ottawa on June 18 and Vancouver July 19.
