French President Sarkozy

As the Nuclear Security Summit opened Monday night in Washington, French President Nicolas Sarkozy warned of a possible war between Israel and the Islamic Republic if the world does not step in to prevent Iran from attaining nuclear weapons.

Sarkozy told CBS News that an IAF strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities would be disastrous. “I would not want the world to wake up to a conflict between Israel and Iran quite simply because the international community has been incapable of acting.”

According to the French President, the best way to avoid this avoid this disaster scenario is the world needs to reaffirm its commitment to Israel’s safety and security and, “Israel, furthermore, must equally make the necessary effort in order to bring about a fair and lasting peace with their Palestinian neighbours.” Sarkozy added that a unified UN Security Council decision would be the best route to take in this matter but that it must not come at the cost of a resolution so see-through it would achieve nothing.

The Jerusalem Post reported that Sarkozy claimed France would not give up its own nuclear arsenal because in doing so the nation’s security would be jeopardized. He further stressed that France was the only country in the world to publicly declare the number of nuclear warheads it possessed -300 to be exact- and that it has since ceased all nuclear testing. Sarkozy also said that he could not do more at present in fear that it would imperil France’s security and as head of state he refused to put his country in danger.

“I have inherited the legacy of the efforts made by my predecessors to build up arms as a nuclear power, and I could not give up nuclear weapons, insofar as I wasn’t sure that the world was a stable and safe place,” he said. “I will not give up that nuclear weapon because it underpins my country’s security. I will not do so on a unilateral basis in a world as dangerous as the one in which we live in today.”

The French President told the media that while a virtual world free of nuclear powers would be greatly applauded, he knows that this is merely a dream and the UN must impose tighter sanctions when it comes to Iran’s potential gain of nuclear weaponry. Besides UN sanctions, Sarkozy’s proposed solution is to urge the international community to openly declare its support of Israel and the country’s security in hopes that the Jewish State never unleashes its nuclear armoury upon Iran.
