Natalie Portman is finally being given a chance to show off her Israeli roots. Though the actress has admittedly tired of being asked the same questions about the Middle East, Portman has shown that she still has what it takes to be an Israeli in the new trailer for her directorial debut, ‘A Tale of Love and Darkness’.

The movie is based on the memoir of Israeli author Amos Oz, and his experiences living in Israel and experiencing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as an Israeli. Portman plays the character of Fania, Oz’s mother, who suffers from depression following her relocation to Jerusalem after the war.

The film has garnered a great deal of media attention since its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, due to the controversy of tackling a topic like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with many critics calling the film biased and a “love letter to Israel.”

Portman, who was born in Israel, has expressed on numerous occasions her connection to the State of Israel, and recently admitted in an interview her fear of rising anti-Semitism in Europe. The actress has also spoken out against Benjamin Netanyahu, saying she was “very, very upset and disappointed he was elected,” and denouncing the Prime Minister for his many “racist” comments.
