After reports were released claiming that President Obama would appear on The Daily Show to see off Jon Stewart, the President held true to his word, and came on the show to discuss the recent Iranian nuclear deal.

Beginning the show by reciting his “Haftorah” the long-time host of The Daily Show eventually invited the President out onto the stage, leading into a lengthy conversation covering a wide range of political issues the Obama administration has had to face, most notably the Iranian nuclear deal.

“People are seeing some of the work we started way back when I first came in,” began the president. “Iran, for example, we put those sanctions in and methodically built pressure on Iran over the course of four or five years to get them to the table to negotiate… and it finally comes to fruition.”

Stewart, ever the political pundit, quickly responded, asking the Commander-in-Chief, “Whose side are we on in the Middle East? We’re fighting with Iraqi’s to defeat ISIS, along with Iran, but in Yemen were fighting Iran with Iraqis and Saudis… who are we bombing?”

“Right now we’re going after ISIL… but with respect to Iran – look this is an adversary. They are anti-American, anti-Israel, anti-Semitic, they sponsor terrorist organizations like Hezbollah,” the president explained.

“Sounds like a good partner for peace,” Stewart quickly and sarcastically chimed in.

“Well, as has been said frequently, ‘you don’t make peace with your friends. The issue here is, do we want them having a nuclear weapon? The answer is no.” responded Obama.

The American Congress received Sunday the Iranian nuclear deal in its entirety, including many provisions kept secret from the general public. Now that Congress has received the agreement, they will have 60 days to review the agreement, debate it in hearings, and decide whether or not to approve or disapprove of the deal. Although the president does have the ability to override a congressional disapproval of the plan, Congress also has the ability to vote to veto Obama’s overruling.

The agreement, in its most general form, is intended to restrict and monitor the Iranian nuclear program in exchange for international sanctions relief. Though many are heralding the deal as a new age in Iranian-American diplomacy, American allies in the region Israel and Saudi Arabia have condemned the deal in the strongest possible terms. Israel recently began lobbying Congress to vote to disapprove of the plan.
