Last week marked a milestone in the stride to equality with the legalization of gay marriage across the United States.
The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled in favour of the legalization of gay marriage across the entire country, garnering a significant amount of pride from the LGBTQ community and its supporters.
One member of SCOTUS, however, Antonin Scalia, protested this milestone that was made in America history.
Scalia called the ruling “absurd,” "interpretive jiggery-pokery” and “pure applesauce.”
Famous for making light of recent situations in the news media, including the Charleston shooting, Donald Trump’s candidacy announcement and Caitlyn Jenner’s transition, Jon Stewart took to The Daily Show to quip about Scalia’s attestations.
Stewart illustrated his argument by drawing on Scalia’s assertions concerning freedom of speech. According to Stewart, Scalia was rattled concerning the “select, patrician, highly unrepresentative panel of nine.”
Despite this, Stewart argues Scalia’s hypocrisy by bringing up the public’s opinion on Obamacare and campaign finance spending.
Stewart continued, “Or, if the voters want a Voting Rights Act, and kept electing Congresses that kept renewing its anti-racial bias provisions by super-majority votes again and again. Then, not only did Scalia overturn it, he had no problem dismissing all of those elected representatives’ motives for passing racial justice legislation in the first place.”
Memes of Scalia as the “human dissentipede” were consistently shown onscreen next to Stewart.
Stewart ended the program by presenting a cartoon ode to Scalia not getting his way with regards to the gay marriage legislation.
At the end of the short video, Scalia becomes happy to find applesauce in his pantry, however, is only disappointed for it to spill on him, sadly exclaiming “Oh jiggery-pokery.”
