Amy Schumer Faces Criticism For “Lazy” (And Racist) Jokes

The comedian is coming under fire for her insensitive jokes

Comedian Amy Schumer is under attack from The Guardian who reported that she has a “shockingly large blind spot around race”.

The article largely praised the “smart and sharp” Schumer for her feminism and witty skits, but towards the end of the piece called her jokes lazy.

Schumer took to Twitter to fire back at the article, calling herself a comic who jokes about things people aren’t comfortable with. “Stick with me and trust I am joking,” the post continued. “…You can call it a ‘blind spot for racism’ or ‘lazy’ but you are wrong. It is a joke and it is funny. I know that because people laugh at it.”

The joke that began the debate came from Schumer’s joke about Latinas as she hosted the MTV Movie Awards earlier this year. “Gone Girl, how good was Gone Girl? Such a good movie. IF you didn’t see it, it’s the story of what one crazed white woman, or all Latinas do, if you cheat on them. That’s a fact.” The camera panned to Jennifer Lopez who cringed at first but later laughed it off.

Political correctness and insensitive jokes have been the subject of heated debate among comedians and audience members for years. Schumer did preface her jokes before the Movie Awards by saying she understood people would be angry.
